November. The month when stuff happens.

November is packed with holidays and days with special significance. You know, like election day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, etc. We, at DakotAbilities, have discovered that there are tons of other events also worth noting.

He Called It.

Charles Schulz always said the Peanuts comic strip would out-live him. In November of 1999 he created his final farewell strip. It did not appear in newspapers until February 13, 2000. Charles Schulz passed away in his sleep the night before.

Lunch, etc.

In November of 2005, DakotAbilities began a business called Lunch, etc. in the Minnehaha Co. Admin building selling lunches ("good food and not expensive" said one reviewer). Several people we serve were paid to work there and it was a great training ground for other employments. They operated the lunch until July 28, 2017.

Why Can't We All Just Get Along?

On Monday, November 26 of 2012, New York City had no violent crimes committed the entire day. It is the only time that has happened in the city's history. The police chief said it was great way to start the week.

International Tolerance Day fits in with DakotAbilities' mission perfectly. Since November 16, 1995, the day has been recognized world wide. To learn more, go to International Day for Tolerance | UNESCO.

Do Not Pass Go. Do Not Collect $200.

Parker Brothers sold its first Monopoly game in November of 1935 and introduced the world to Milburn Pennybags who is also known as Rich Uncle Pennybags. There is a lot of amazing history surrounding the iconic game. If you want to learn more go to History of Monopoly - Wikipedia.

A few weeks ago Rep. Dusty Johnson came to Longfellow Center for a tour. While he was here Jarrod challenged him to a game but Rep. Johnson had to decline. To date, Jarrod owns over 40 versions of the game!

One side note: In November of 1963, Hasbro introduced the Easy Bake Oven.

Giving Tuesday the South Dakota Way

Over 200 nonprofits across the state will again be participating in SDGives. SDGives is a take-off of the national Giving Tuesday that was designed to follow the crazy consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The desire is to encourage goodness and generosity around the world.

SDGives is a fun 24 hours of raising awareness and money for causes that matter in our state. People like you give, then encourage friends and family to give. The effect is seeing how your gift changes lives and makes us all proud to live here. Yup. We got this!

Want to get a jump on it? We already have matching gifts in hand so whatever you give will be even more significant. Just click on the button below and we will apply it to that magical day.
